On Snowshoes

Because we have been out
on snowshoes for more
than an hour, and have
just climbed the grade
that leads from the
emigrant road to the ridge,

and because here, out
of the surrounding forest,
the sun warms us again,
you take off your knit hat
and your hair swirls
in the light and wind

and I think of
the tow-headed daughter
we might someday have,
see her as she
whirls the hem of her
new, small dress
because she is
so delighted
with it blue.
