P O E T R Y

After Someone Asked

worse than forgetting your keys is remembering
they were left in the body
in the middle of the road

a deer frozen in your headlights
drains power from the battery
and walks away

you abandon your vehicle of silver dollars
lay violescent hands on its flank
and skin your way to its gunmetal children

sex can’t be destroyed or created
but it can grow forgetful
wish the blood off its scrubs

tonight, our perigee-syzygy, the moon is closer
than it has ever been. you, deer, me. tonight
in the middle of the road

it smells of night swimming
and the moon’s pull is no greater
